Abstract

Religion is a dominant factor in the identity of individuals as well as of peoples. The identity of individuals concerning their religion is a highly private matter. In forming a people’s identity religion is of public importance and fulfils public functions. The paper describes the function of religion in forming identities in several Western European countries. It takes France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Poland, as well as some other European states to analyse differences as well as common features in historical and contemporary experience.
